Tradition – Hans van Manen

“What are we to do? For one thing, directly searching my own conscience, I believe an effort has to be made to perpetuate the repertoire.

Without repertoire, there is no tradition. And without tradition, there is no connection with all that has been done prior to the present. Tradition is not something of the past. Tradition is what we do with the past today. The future is about discovering the good things of the past and building on them. I see a task here for the media. And for the government ….”

Hans van Manen in his speech of thanks on occasion of the presentation of the Erasmus Prize in the Royal Palace in Amsterdam on Friday 3 November 2000.
